Throughout the centuries, composers loved to limit themselves with complicated forms – freed from these forms we discover a different side of these artists.
No sonatas, rondos or variations, just beautiful, freely associated music that moves its listener from beginning to end. Schubert’s Fantasia in f minor for piano four handed is viewed as a touchstone of pianistics, and emblematic for Romanticism. De Falla’s Fantasia Bætica is a colourful ode to his homeland Andalusia. Purcell’s Fantazias are short, wonderful chamber music pieces in which Purcell harmonically seems to be two centuries ahead of its time.
