Calefax and Nasr take the audience on a journey from the bizarre Middle Ages, through touching Italian folk music, to the polyphony of the Renaissance, which captured Ramsey’s imagination. Finally, we tumble through Romanticism into the world of opera, ending with the grand infatuation Nasr conceived for a Soviet composer he still affectionately calls Shoske. Wherever Ramsey’s fascination takes him, he knows he has the support of Calefax: the adventurous reed players also make their own brilliant arrangements of existing music. In short, an evening full of Solage, Johannes Ockeghem, Helen Hopekirk, Nina Simone, Umm Kulthum, Dmitri Shostakovich and a brand new work by Joey Roukens. And maybe Nasr himself will sing a song.
