The New World according to Dvořák

The New World
According to Dvořák

9 January until 7 February 2021

Calefax highlights American music scarcely played before Dvořák’s sojourn in the USA, as well as the development that music in America went through after his departure.

In 1891, Antonìn Dvořák was invited to the United States to found the ‘American style of music’. Until then there was hardly an American identity in classical music; composers based their works on music of their European ancestors. However, when Dvořák first heard spirituals in America for the first time, he knew these songs might function like the Bohemian folk music he used in his own works. After three years of living in New York, he felt that through the music of Native Americans and African Americans, America would find its own national style of music.
