Raaf: “That was a funny TV-broadcast. We did a theatrical program called Roaring Twenties (with singer Cora Burggraaf), in which we acted as a backdrop for her as a cabaret singer and actress. Hence the hats… What you hear is the final movement of what actually is a large-scale orchestral work, in which the composer depicts an American bewildered by the Parisian city life, sometimes being scared away by the traffic (honking taxi horns!) and then again overwhelmed by home sickness. In this last movement he seems to have overcome these feelings. It is a joyous finale!”
